National Libraries Day

National Libraries Day - February

This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all that is so fantastic about libraries - and what they do for us. As we are not in school, we always have our celebrations throughout the week.

Saturday 8 February 2014!

Our pupil library assistant team were treated to some 'Love your Library' heart-shaped biscuits at their team planning meeting on Tuesday - they do a wonderful job and work hard to make your Library run smoothly.

Who won our #NLD14 'love your library' raffle? Everyone borrowing and reading a book in the week of NLD was entered into our raffle. Congratulations to Morgan (Year 7), Bethan (Year 8), Lauren (Year 9), Natasha (Year 10), Daniel (Year 12) and Mrs Mackeen (Staff).

Loving libraries - loving books!

To celebrate Valentine's Day, we turned our thoughts to our 'book crush' - which character in a book have we fallen in love with?

Favourites were hotly contested - candidates chosen ranged from Callum McGregor in Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses "because he is sensitive, sweet and loving', Evan Walker in Rick Yancey's The Fifth Wave who is "PERFECT", and Holly Hills in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, described simply as "fit". Fletcher Renn from the Skulduggery Pleasant series was chosen for his "awesome hair"! Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, Jenna in Emma Pass' Acid and Amy Pond from the Doctor Who series, plus Cheryl Cole and Hannah Montana got votes. Charlie Bone's adventuring skills were admired in the series by Jenny Nimmo and Howl Jenkins in Diana Wynne Jones' Howl's Moving Castle was declared "pretty hot as wizards go!!" Newcomers in the 'book crush' stakes included Nick from Geek Girl by Holly Smale and August from RJ Palacio's Wonder.

Congratulations to our Book Crush winners Michael (Year 9) and Ms Robbins (Staff)!

Pupils also enjoyed matching up Literary Lovers in the Library. For reuniting most characters with their correct partners, whose broken hearts had previously been scattered across the Library, first prize went to Dana (Year 10).

Identify the Book Jacket competitions, divided into three sections - Years 7 and 8, Years 9 to Sixth Form and Staff. Book jackets were on display in the Canteen, in the Library and on the school network. The canteen reported many pupils having a go at the competition while in the canteen queue!

As you can see from the photo, our 'We love our school library' tree was pretty full of lovely comments and really demonstrates the roleimg_0731 the Library plays and how important it is felt to be.

We were pleased to welcome many pupils and staff popping in during the week to take part in an event, check their competition entries, browse, borrow, discover something new, sign up for a club and just enjoy their school library!
